Wolf Awareness Week October 19-27, 2024

Wolf Awareness Week 2024 will focus on the critical threats facing wolves across the U.S., and the conservation strategies that form an integral part of our participation in the AZA SAFE Mexican Gray Wolf program. 

We will celebrate this with a combination of education outreach, family-friendly events, and fundraising.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
●       October 19, 12:00pm  - CWC Visitor Center & Nature Store: Kick-off Event. Join our Education Director, Jacob Keeton, for a presentation examining the catastrophic decline of wild wolf populations in the U.S. and the methods for restoring wolves to their natural habitats.

●      October 19, 10:30am-11:30am -  Lakeside Library: Wolf Story Time: Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? Not us! Join Education Assistant Alycia Brewer as she reads illustrated stories for children that show wolves in a more "paws"-itive light.

●       October 19, 3:00pm-4:00pm - Lakeside Library: Adventures for Adults-California Wolf Center. Learn more about wolves and the vital role they play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem with this fun, informative presentation.

●       October 20, 2:40pm California Wolf Center Conservation Facility: Wolf Awareness Week Specialty Tour. What better way to increase your wolf awareness than to spend an afternoon with CWC's ambassador wolves? On this special educational tour, you'll have a chance to toss delicious treats to CWC's wolves and gain insight into their behavior, biology, and history.

●       October 21, 6:00 pm -  Wintu’s Webinars: Wolf Pup Fostering with Maggie Dwire. Join us for another exciting Wintu's Webinars featuring Maggie Dwire, Deputy Mexican Wolf Recovery Coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Learn how Maggie and the process of pup fostering are changing the tale of the Mexican Gray Wolf from a tragedy into one of the greatest conservation success stories ever told. Webinar tickets are FREE for all CWC members, or $15 for non-members.

●       October 22, 10:00am-12:00pm -  San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum: Wolf Story Time: Second reading of illustrated wolf stories for children.

●       October 23, 10:00am-11:00am -  Julian Public Library: Wolf Story Time. Third reading of illustrated wolf stories for children.

●       October 26, 10:00am-12:00pm -  William Heise Park: Enjoy an educational outdoor presentation about wolves at William Heise Park, which will be lead by Education Assistant Nicole Ciongoli.

●       October 26, 2:00pm-6:00pm -  Julian Wonderfest: Gather with CWC Volunteer Coordinator Joe Breshears and other Julian organizations at Menghini Winery for Wonderfest, a free event which will include a late night astronomy star party, family activities, food. and more.

All Week Long:

●       Wolf Art Contest - To celebrate wolves this year, we are hosting our first ever Wolf Art Contest. Share your love of wolves through a beautiful illustration and you'll have a chance to win a CWC tour package or other cool prizes. The grand prize winner will be announced on October 25. Their work will also be featured as the official art of next year's Wolf Awareness Week flyer! Must be 18 or older to enter. See link for additional contest rules and details.
